Nutrition advice from Fistral Spa

Nutrition in today’s society is such a large topic to discuss, with dietary advice readily available in books, on the internet or in diet clubs. However through my knowledge and experience gained, for me it simply comes down to one word, ‘Moderation’. For example, if you are an active gym goer, your body will need more calories to function day to day. If you are not very active, then your calorie intake overall should be lower. What I’m trying to say is that diet is as individual as each person.

If you’re trying to lose weight then you will need a well balanced diet whilst using the basics or calorie input vs. output! With whichever way the balance tips is down to the factor of gaining and losing weight. If you are an avid dieter then it’s more likely than your weight will fluctuate due to periods of starvation, coupled with normal dieting. Once you begin to starve the body, it’s likely that once you put food in, your body will be quick to absorb the nutrients it needs. This is because it’s going from one extreme to the other.

The best way to control weight is by eating well, either 3 meals a day or 5 small meals a day largely depending on your bodies day to day functioning. This coupled with good exercise (around 3+ times a week) will increase your chances of controlling your weight. By thinking about the food you eat and exercising well you can create a plan for weight loss, muscle gain or weight management!

Winter Fitness

By Claire Thompson, Personal Trainer, Fistral Spa.

Winter can be a time when it’s all too tempting to hibernate but come spring you’ll discover you’ve morphed into a couch potato and your surfing could suffer as a result.

Why not make the most of the shorter surfing hours to get involved in another activity which will challenge your body and have a positive effect on your time in the water. Anything that raises your heart rate, gets your muscles pumping or works on your core and balance skills will enhance your performance in the surf.

Surfing is a full body activity so it is important to train and workout using all muscle groups. Paddling out requires a good level of chest, shoulder and back strength, your pop up also brings in your abs and hip flexors and riding the wave recruits your legs and core.

Getting involved in classes such as Yoga and Pilates will help strengthen and activate your core muscles whilst also enhancing your balance and also developing your flexibility which will also help to prevent injury.  Likewise any exercises using a Bosu, balance board or stability ball will help to improve  your balance.  If you’re into workouts in the gym or at home try and incorporate squats, lunges, press-ups and the plank into your routine.

Also look out for classes such as core training, bootcamps and Crossfit which will push your body to the limit, boost your metabolism and enable you to surf better for longer.

Trying out a new sport will also bring great benefits. How about taking a break and heading to the mountains for a ski or snowboarding trip, or hit one of the numerous snowdomes to see how frozen water treats you. A new craze that’s sweeping the nation is Rollerderby. It’ll increase your cardiovascular fitness, get your legs pumping and most importantly is great fun. Teams are popping up all over the country so dust off those skates and get yourself along.

Whatever you decide to take on, you’ll can count on the fact that getting off the couch , participating in a new activity and meeting like minded people will make you feel heaps better than hiding under that Snuggie watching reality TV until the clocks change back ever could.

September Newsletter

September is like the new term at Fistral Spa.  For many of us after a busy summer it is time to look after ourselves, perhaps a winter holiday to look forward to or just an opportunity to get back into a routine after the holidays.

To help all our members achieve their goals we have some new faces joining our team.  Some may have already seen Claire Thompson who will be starting full time on 13th September.

Claire originates from East Yorkshire and has a BSc Honours Degree in Sport Studies aswell as her Personal Training qualifications and level 3 Gym Instructor certificate. Her experience ranges from Aspen Colorado  where she was assistant manager of a health club to other ski resorts in Europe and jobs in the hospitality industry in Australia. Claire has now settled in Newquay and wants to combine her customer service skills she has developed in the tourism industry with her love of sport and fitness.  One of Claire’s roles was in a busy gym in London where she was employed as a personal trainer and fitness consultant.  There she delivered effective training programmes, guided members, held consultations and offered advice.  She is relishing the chance to demonstrate her industriousness, enthusiasm and put her wide skills into practice.

Also joining our team is Adam Fieldhouse.  Also originating in Yorkshire his family moved to Newquay after holidaying here for many years.  Adam has just achieved a Sports Science BSc Honours Degree after 4 years of study at the University of Gloucestershire.  Adam will bring a different approach to the gym using his degree to structure training schedules, explore nutritional paths and using psychological techniques to improve motivation, self esteem and encourage people to try harder.  Adam is passionate about sport and has represented the country in rugby leagues during their tour in Kazakhstan ‘ The Great Britain Pioneers’.  He is also a very good chef!

Also helping in the spa will be Joe Batten and Michaela Armstrong.  Sadly Stuart is leaving and we wish him good luck for the future and thank you for all your hard work.

As of 19th September we will be launching our new class timetable which will continue with the Zumba and Yoga.  Claire will be holding an Express Core Class (30 mins) and a Bootcamp (60 mins).  She can also do a boxing class if the interest is there.  Please let us know at reception if you have any other suggestions or requirements.

For you to get to know the new fitness staff we are offering all existing members one free 30 minute personal training session which you will need to book at reception with either Della or Anna or the new gym staff.  There will also be new challenges and incentives for those who like to be pushed!

Located on the edge of Dartmoor and situated just five minutes from Plymouth, Boringdon Hall is a beautiful grade 1 listed Elizabethan Manor. Our new website is now live at www.boringdonhall.co.uk  and we are currently taking bookings for Valentine’s Day if you fancy a little romantic getaway!

Fistral Spa Shortlisted for Prestigious Spa Award

Finally, the wait is over. Cornwall’s Fistral Spa is pleased to announce that it has been shortlisted for the 2011 Professional Beauty Awards – the most highly sought-after title of its kind in the industry. The Newquay-based spa, which has gone from strength to strength since its opening three years ago, is one of only five spas nationwide to make the shortlist in their Residential Spa of The Year category. The announcement helps to fortify the reputation of Fistral Spa as one of the finest in the country.

Ahead of the glamorous award ceremony at London’s Intercontinental Hotel, in February next year, a select panel of judges will be re-visiting Fistral Spa and conducting ‘secret shopper’ tests to determine the outright winner.

Nestled at the heart of The 4* Bay Hotel and overlooking Fistral Beach, the spa boasts nine ESPA treatment rooms and a luxurious relaxation room, in addition to an indoor child-free vitality pool with underwater music, spa bath, steam room and sauna. Treatments ranging from aromatherapy and massage to facials and full body wraps are available, along with more specialist choices such as the ‘Surfer’s Massage’ - something the judges are unlikely to find anywhere else.

Since its shortlisting last year, Fistral Spa has been busy implementing new initiatives and further strengthening training standards of all the Spa Professionals in the hope that 2011 will secure a win for the Cornish Spa.

“We have all been working very hard to provide a unique, professional and friendly experience for all our customers and the announcement of the shortlist is a real testament to our team - It is a huge honour to be recognised among the best spas in the UK,” says Manager Diane Nettleton. “I have every confidence in our wonderful team of therapists and we’re all really looking forward to the finals”.
