Gold Environmental Award for Two Newquay Hotels

The recently-refurbished 4* Bay Hotel and Esplanade Hotel, both of which are located on the Pentire Peninsula in Newquay, have scooped Gold Awards in the Green Tourism Business Scheme Awards – the benchmark of eco-friendliness in the hospitality sector.

The most prestigious national award of its kind, the GTBS awards are the only certification scheme validated by Visit Britain. Following an assessment by a qualified grading advisor The Bay and Esplanade Hotels were marked against a rigourous set of criteria, covering areas such as biodiversity, energy, water efficiency, waste management and more.

In the Green Tourism Business Scheme Awards, The Bay was highlighted for its excellent use of technology to ensure that the building achieved energy efficiency and for its ‘Go Green Booklet’ that informs guests how they can help to reduce their environmental impact.  The Esplanade, meanwhile, was similarly praised for its work to minimise waste and for the emphasis placed on encouraging guests to access the surrounding environment through walking and cycling.  Both hotels were generally seen as demonstrating excellence in environmental practice and promoting sustainable tourism.

“We’re delighted to have achieved a prestigious Gold GTBS award,” says James Nettleton, Director of the four-star Bay Hotel and The Esplanade Hotel. “The award reflects the hard work and commitment we've put in to minimising the environmental impact of our business. Sustainable Tourism is vital, particularly in Cornwall, and we are pleased to be at the forefront, implementing green technologies and policies at every level of our business whilst maintaining the highest levels of service and comfort to our customers. I would like to thank all our team for their dedication and hard work in achieving these awards".

The GTBS is an environmental accreditation scheme for tourism businesses supported by VisitEngland. It assesses tourism businesses against a wide range of criteria including management and marketing, communication, energy and water use, purchasing policies, waste minimisation and recycling, transport, wildlife and landscape. Within these broad categories the award reflects good environmental practice in relation to monitoring procedures, biodiversity planning and management, community projects, information provision, education and environmental sustainability.

The scheme was launched in 1998 by Quality Assurance and helps tourism businesses save money by improving their environmental performance. The Green Tourism Business Scheme provides a tangible and measurable response for individual businesses to pursue a more sustainable path.
